Back to School: The value of bilingual education

The U.S. education system has long placed a low priority on speaking languages other than English. As a result, there is a widespread lack of foreign language education in our public schools. I admit, I am a result of this. Four years of high school Spanish just doesn’t cut it. I am far from fluent. But we can do better for our children! According to a publicschoolreview.com article, as of 2008, only 18.5 percent of K-12 students were enrolled in a foreign language class. In contrast, China has more students learning English than the entire United States population!
